Video: The Richard Gere Guitar Collection

September 29th, 2011

In anticipation of the coming auction of his guitar collection at Christie’s, Richard Gere recently sat down with Kerry Keane, Head of Christie’s Musical Instruments department, and guitarist G.E. Smith, to discuss the vintage guitars and amplifiers he will be selling in October in New York.

Watch the video below for a look at some of these exquisite pieces, including Albert King’s Flying V.

  • Great actor and obviously a very passionate guitar collector as well! Great video. Thanks!

  • Very nice! However, what is never addressed is why Gere is selling all these guitars he obviously loves so dearly. What’s the purpose of this auction? What is he holding onto? He must certainly still love to play guitar and having them in his life.

Stratoblogster, Gere’s a devout Buddhist. In the GA article on his collection, he mentioned he’s selling the majority (but not all) of his collection in order to raise money to build schools in Tibet.

Today is the day for the auction so I’ll offer ya $15 for one of those beauties. I just saw the GA mag at the store for the first time so thought I’d look at your web site.

  • Great article. “Loved it, especially when Richard was talking about how much he loves finding a guitar shop in every city he goes to, and how much he loves chatting with the people who run them, and of course checking out all the cool old guitars.”
Richard is a very cool guy. I know. He used to live around the block from me in Greenwich Village, NY and he often dined at the Da Silvano Restaurant a lot (I was a Manager/Matre’d there for 3 1/2 yrs).
I remember how proud and happy he was when he brought his newly born son Homer Jones Gere to the restaurant and beamed as he held him up and introduced him to me. Very Cool.
Richard is a humanitarian who cares about other people, and this is the reason he has decide to sell the collection which I’m sure he loves very much. He is going to Donate the proceed to charity. A very nice gesture of kindness and caring, to say the least.
    “Rock On Richard”

He’s building schools in the Himalayas which i believe he’s already done with his own money. He’s owns plenty of guitars since he’s auctioning off over 100 of them (!!) and the money is earmarked for more schools. He’s a practicing Buddist and has a relationship with the Dalai Lama.

He’s very involved in several humanitarian causes worldwide and I believe he wanted to raise money for them…
