Van Halen paid tribute to Davie Bowie on their web site on Monday, posting details about how the singer influenced them and serving up a recording of the band performing Bowie’s 1973 hit “The Jean Genie” in 1976. You can hear the audio clip below.

The Van Halen News Desk released the clip on January 11, as news of David Bowie’s death became known. “The Jean Genie” was performed at the Pasadena Hilton in 1976.

The site also notes that Van Halen’s cover of the Kinks’ song “Where Have All the Good Times Gone!” on Diver Down was itself influenced by David Bowie’s 1973 cover of the song on his tribute album Pin-Ups.

“It was David Bowie’s version of The Kinks’ ‘Where Have All the Good Times Gone’ that inspired Van Halen to cover the song,” writes VHND.com. “This little tidbit was never known to Van Halen fans until today.”

Bowie’s version of the song is below, followed by Van Halen’s.
