The Oeno File: 1988 Rieussec Sauternes

March 4th, 2011

By Chris Gill

Located adjacent to Yquem, Château Rieussec may not be made with the exacting attention to detail as its lofty neighbor, but in outstanding vintages like 1988 it is one of only a handful of Sauternes wines that can rival Château d’Yquem.

I purchased several full-size bottles of 1988 Rieussec upon its release in the early Nineties, and marveled as its color matured from pale straw to a rich honey-gold hue over the years. That honey-like character remains in the nose and on the palate, where it blends with caramel, orange blossom, apricot, and elegant botrytis flavors. The finish is moderate but not overwhelming, making for a great dessert pairing rather than a dessert main event.
