Below, check out “Perfect Pedal Order with Steve Vai,” part of Musician’s Friend’s ongoing series of useful webinars.

Musician’s Friend and Boss got together to present this particular episode, which was shot at Roland headquarters in Los Angeles earlier this year.

“Anything goes,” says Vai in the video. “There are no mistakes you can make — except run out of batteries.”

Thank you and especially Steve for taking the time for that presentation. I not only gained a new appreciation for Steve’s musicality and his character but I have a deeper perspective on pedals/effects. I was pleased to see that some of my conclusions from my extensive research about effects (BOSS in particular) over the last couple of years were parallel to the concepts he expressed. Of course only a few but I’m not Steve Vai and I am a little short on experience. Great gift to all of us – thanks again. I know he needs no validation but would you please thank Steve for me for his valuable insight.

All due respect to Mr Vai. I think he’s a bit confused about how signal chains work. Despite what he said, He’s not putting the amp distortion before the distortion pedal in his signal chain, unless he’s using an effects look, which he said he never does. The host obviously recognized that what Steve was saying didn’t make any sense. I can’t believe this got posted here without being corrected.
