Joe Perry has formed a “supergroup” with Alice Cooper and actor Johnny Depp.

Called the Hollywood Vampires, the group has confirmed a performance at the Rock in Rio festival next September, where they will play on the same night as Queens of the Stone Age and System of a Down.

Cooper confirmed the news on February 14 via Instagram.

Cooper previously used the name Hollywood Vampires for a Seventies supergroup that featured John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and Harry Nilsson.

For that matter, Paul McCartney has already hit the studio with the new incarnation of the group to work on a project. Perry told the Chicago Sun-Times last July that the group recorded together but would not divulge any details.

“I was in the studio with Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp, playing guitar, and the three of us are looking at each other like, hey, we’re sitting here with Paul McCartney!” Perry told the Sun-Times. “And we’re all looking at each other like open-mouthed kids.”

Perry and Depp’s friendship goes back years. Depp wrote the preface to Perry’s 2014 memoir, Rocks, and gave him a Wandre/Davoli BB guitar. Depp also provided background vocals for Aerosmith’s 2012 song “Freedom Fighter” and performed “Train Kept a Rollin’” onstage with them last year.

“We’re cut from the same cloth,” Perry says of Depp. “We both love the blues and guitars.” http://www.guitaraficionado.com/in-his-new-autobiography-joe-perry-lifts-the-curtain-on-aerosmiths-turbulent-history.html

Depp and Cooper’s association is strong as well. They’ve performed onstage together for several events, and Cooper had a comedy role as himself in the 2012 vampire comedy Dark Shadows, which starred Depp.

Depp, for his part, recently expressed his disgust for actors who dabble in music.

“That whole idea for me is a sickening thing,” he said in January at a press conference for his new comedy movie, Mordecai. “It’s always just made me sick. I hate the idea, ‘Come see me play the guitar because you’ve seen me in 12 movies.’

“I’ve been very lucky to play on friends’ records, and it’s still going. Music is still part of my life. But you won’t be hearing the Johnny Depp Band. That won’t ever exist.”

The Hollywood Vampires, on the other hand, seems to suit Depp just fine.
