Jimmy Page Fires Back at Keith Richards

Led Zeppelin founder Jimmy Page has responded to the disparaging comments Keith Richards made about Led Zeppelin in his recent Rolling Stone interview.

Speaking with Classic Rock magazine, Page said he thinks Richards was being sensational for the sake of getting some press for his new album, Crosseyed Heart, which came out this past September.

“Keith can say what he wants,” says the Zeppelin guitar icon, who recently announced his plans for a new solo album in 2016. “He’s Keith Richards. I think he’s done some amazing work. I respect his playing. And he has a solo album out.

“But if I was promoting a new album, would I be more caustic? The answer is… no. I’m not sure what he means by calling Led Zeppelin ‘hollow.’ I think he’s got his tongue in his cheek. What we did was really cool.”

Richards comment came in response to interviewer Patrick Doyle’s statement, “I was never a big Zeppelin guy.”

“Me neither,” Richards replied. “I love Jimmy Page, but as a band, no, with John Bonham thundering down the highway in an uncontrolled 18-wheeler. He had cornered the market there. Jimmy is a brilliant player. But I always felt there was something a little hollow about it, you know?”

Led Zeppelin weren’t the only band that the Stones legend has called in recent months. He shrugged off Metallica and Black Sabbath as “great jokes,” and dubbed the Beatles’ 1967 masterpiece Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Bandrubbish,” claiming its influence was responsible for the Stones’ disastrous Their Satanic Majesties Request album.

“The Beatles sounded great when they were the Beatles,” Richards said. “But there’s not a lot of roots in that music. I think they got carried away.

“Some people think it’s a genius album, but I think it’s a mishmash of rubbish, kind of like Satanic Majesties.”

Come on guy’s, can’t we all just get along…..?

  • Keith is a wanker. Zep is the best and will always be the best Rock and Roll band. The Stones early stuff was good, post 1985 all rubbish. Keith’s still in a drug induced coma

Except for the plagiarism, Zeppelin was great from the first album through Presence. “Hollow” doesn’t do them justice.

Jimmy, you shouldn’t have wasted time replying. Keith is just trolling in 3-D. I’m not a health care professional but it’s possible he no longer has the ability to process information properly. You know, like Charlie Sheen….

  • Sorry to hear Keiths comments that are terribly ungenerous.
Both The Stones & Zep have contributed mightally to R&R.
Sad to see Keith being so petty.
Pete Townshend’s dismissal too of Led Zeppelin
    just comes off as jealousy.
There’s still time to say your sorry guys!

… People: listen. These individuals certainly deserve their opinions and we are incredibly fortunate to be able to hear them. These are precious insights: Listen and learn from/about each of them. I, for one, am honored and grateful that we are allowed this kind of access.

Seriously, Keith Richards?! Of what relevance is your opinion of LZ? The number of albums they’ve sold and continue to sell . . . would that be enough evidence to establish them as definitive rock legends? How about honors bestowed upon them? America’s highest cultural award – The Kennedy Honors medal? Ever hear of it, Mr. Richards? Your bashing of LZ, Jimmy Page, and the Beatles smacks of professional jealousy. I suspect years of narcotics abuse could lead one to such conclusions.
