On Sunday, September 13, REO Speedwagon guitarist Gary Richrath died at the age of 65 from as-yet-undetermined causes.

Richrath wrote many of REO Speedwagon’s songs, including hits like “Ridin’ the Storm Out,” “Son of a Poor Man,” “Only the Strong Survive” “and “Take It on the Run.” He was known as a melodic and soulful soloist, and was most frequently seen with a sunburst Gibson Les Paul in his hands.

Though he left REO Speedwagon in 1989, he rejoined in 2013 to perform a benefit for tornado victims in Bloomington, Illinois.

In his memory, we’ve assembled 10 of Richrath’s finest moments in REO Speedwagon. May he rest in peace.

“Can’t Fight That Feeling”

“In My Dreams”

“In Your Letter”
