Blog: A Spider, from the Ox

Dean Guitars, in conjunction with the estate of late Who bassist John Entwistle is unveiling two models of the new John Entwistle bass line at the 2011 Winter NAMM show. Dubbed the Spider and the Hybrid, both are constructed at the company’s USA Custom Woodshop in Tampa, FL and incorporate the new Aphex Exciter/Big Bottom/Compression circuit on board (there is also a second, non-USA line Hybrid available at a more affordable price point.)

The Spider in particular is a thing of beauty, sporting a flame maple top and back, Padauk spider web, logo and cavity covers and Padauk “black widow” inlays with a pearl “spider” inlay at the 12th fret. Available in a limited run of 25, it may not be a bargain, but could just be the best you’ve ever had.

If I am not mistaken, this spider is an almost exact copy of an original Alembic bass. Is this were we have gone in modern lutherie? I saw an ESP with “hippy sandwich” DECALS to simulate the wood layers at a shop recently? Terrible.
